Three of our Grade 6 students had the opportunity to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the Sunday we arrived in D.C. while the adult chaperones, their classmates and many other visitors observed.

25th Anniversary Reception

On May 16th, a Reception and Reunion was held for Akiva's 25th Anniversary.
The event was held at the Davis Center at Fellowship Park in Mill Creek.

Present and past staff members, past graduates and parents spent time during the afternoon reception reminiscing many events that are tied to Akiva's history.

As we came into the All Purpose Room , Jocko the clown was putting on his makeup.

He then had a program of magic, juggling and balloon sculpturing. He also had a message throughout his assembly, "Reading is Magic."

25th Anniversary - Week of Celebration - Monday

A spaghetti dinner, followed by comments from Mrs. Goist and two past graduates and then a balloon launch out in front of our building.

Science Fair

Akiva held its annual Science Fair on March 10.

Ten judges were invited to view the completed projects and to listen as the students discussed the process and the outcomes of their various projects.

Judging concluded by late morning and the ribbon winners were announced that afternoon.

Parents and friends were invited back to Akiva in the evening to view all of the science fair projects that were on display from 6-7:00 P.M.

Grades K-3 created classroom projects for the science fair. They had the opportunity to present their information to the judges also.

Our "Best of Show" was awarded to sixth grader, Arsenia Georgopoulos.

We recently began two of our after school enrichment classes. We are offering a yoga class, along with a golf class.

Spelling Bee

Yesterday afternoon we held our annual Spelling Bee at the JCC All-Purpose Room. Thirty-six students from grades 3-6 participated. Parents, friends, family, and other Akiva staff and students attended the event.

Our winner is Sophie and Morissa is our runner-up.

Andrea won the written spelling bee that was held the day before. All three of the winners display one of their prizes.

Youngstown Recycling Calendar Contest Winners

Yesterday, two of our students, Sarah and Maddie, attended an awards program sponsored by the Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling Board.
Both students were winners in the Recycling Calendar Contest. Their original art work appears in this year's Recycling calendar. The students obtained copies of the calendar and were also awarded a certificate and a gift card.
A special congratulations also goes out to Mrs. Griffith, our art instructor for her guidance and instruction to these, and to all of the Akiva students.

Poster Contest Winners

Students created posters promoting their teams in the Ohio State / Michigan rivalry.
Each classroom selected the winner from their room. Those seven winning posters were then judged by the staff and the top three winners were announced. The top three winners were awarded books and a team photograph.

Mrs. Schonberger created her own Michigan poster... pretty impressive.

Throughout this week we will have various activities involving our students and their families to get ready for Saturday's game. Activiites will include trivia questions, poster contest and "dress up" days. Students on Friday will also get the opportunity to predict the score of the game on Saturday.

The weather truly cooperated with a sunny and blue sky shining down on the students, their pets and all of the guests and Akiva classrooms that came out on the tennis court to view the pets.

Spirit Cups Fundraiser

We will continue with our Spirit Cups Fundraiser through this Wednesday.

Here are some of the students who turned in at least three orders, as they claimed their free cup and their photograph from an OSU football game.

Thanks to all of the families who have participated in this fund raiser. All of the money earned will remain here at Akiva and will be used to purchase technology and instructional materials for our classrooms.

Science Dissections

Earth Day

Mrs. Katz, our Science teacher, had her classes involved in several special activities today for Earth Day. Here the 4th grade students are demonstrating how fragile the Earth is by throwing an egg (colored to depict the Earth).
Dirt cake and H2O were also eaten as part of the Earth Day celebration.

Time Machine

The sixth grade class has been working on a research project on ancient civilizations since earlier in the school year.
Their project resulted in a special culminating activity that involved all of the other Akiva students.
The other classrooms were invited to visit and to enter a “time machine” that would transport students to far away lands of long ago.
After exiting the “time machine”, students were issued passports and were sent to places such as Mesopotamia, Greece, India, Rome, China and Egypt.

Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards

Miss Darla, our Physical Education teacher, presents the Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards to Lexi, Eric and Arsenia. Students were able to independently log their "active lifestyle" and submit their log for approval and for the award. Students were required to show that they had done activities for at least one hour a day, six days a week for six weeks.

Another Successful Science Fair !

At the end of March, Akiva Academy held the annual Science Fair, under the direction of Mrs. Katz, our science teacher. MUCH preparation went into this intense, but enjoyable science activity.

On the day of the Fair, students met individually with a pair of judges and had to explain their project and then answer whatever questions the judges might have. The students did a wonderful job exhibiting their knowledge of the various topics.

Opera Western Reserve

Today we had the Opera Western Reserve Young Artists come and spend time with us at Akiva. We were entertained and learned much about the components and the languages of an opera.

Our sixth grade class today used the Newseum website of newspaper front pages to view some current events and to examine newspapers for areas they were interested in. Using the interactive whiteboard is an effective way for the class to view the front page displays.

Mayor Williams Visits Akiva

Last week we had a special visit from Mayor Williams. The mayor talked to our students from grades 3-6. He offered an informative presentation about city government and about his role in the city's operation. He also spent time answering the questions that the students posed to him.

The mayor's visit was greatly appreciated by all of us who attended his talk.

"Meet the Artists" Show at the Mall

This week Akiva families were invited to the Eastwood Mall Art Gallery to "meet the artists" and to view the students' art works.

The event was well attended by students and their families. Cookies and refreshments were also provided.

Mrs. Griffith, our Art instructor, and her students are to be commended for all of their works that are on display through February 22 at the mall.

Spelling Bee

Akiva held their annual Spelling Bee today. We started with forty-three students from grades 3-6.

Our winner was Zack, with Tyler being our runner-up. Congratulations!

Akiva Artwork Displayed

The Eastwood Mall and the Warren Junior Women's League recently invited our students to exhibit artwork at the Art Outreach Gallery, located across from American Eagle in the Eastwood Mall.

We are presently displaying artwork from each of the Akiva students.

The exhibition will run from Friday, January 23 through Sunday, February 22. The hours of operation will be Friday 5:00-9:00 P.M., Saturday 1:00-9:00 P.M. and Sundays 1:00-5:00 P.M.

We hope you will stop by and view the works of art that have been completed by the Akiva students, under the direction of our art instructor, Mrs. J. Griffith.

Thoughout this week the Akiva students have had some fun preparing for the Ohio State vs. Michigan game that takes place this Saturday. Trivia contests, a poster contest and a day to show off your team's colors were all a part of this week's activities.

We will display the posters in our hall until after the game.

We had a successful "Meet the Teacher" Night last evening.

Opening Week

We had a smooth opening to our school year. Sixty-nine students completed their first week at Akiva.

We returned to a building that has had the cove molding replaced throughout the building and the lunchroom and nearly all of the classrooms have been painted. A special thanks to our custodial staff for all of their work over the summer months.

The Aviva teachers and staff are excited about another great year.

"Move Up" Day

Today we held our annual "Move Up" Day. This day is an opportunity for each of our students to spend a small amount of time with their next year's teacher. Teachers spend some time having students introduce themselves, provide the students a time to ask questions and in many cases, the students are given a classroom project to complete.

Science Fair

We had a very successful Science Fair here at Akiva last Thursday. The enthusiasm and the creativity of our students were very impressive.

We had six "outside" judges evaluate the student projects. We greatly appreciated them spending the morning with us as they talked with the students about their projects and ultimately rated the science projects.

We also greatly appreciate all of the parents, grandparents and friends who stopped by that evening to view the projects and the ribbons that were awarded.

Technology Update

We continue to upgrade our technology hardware and software at Akiva. Here a few kindergarten students are working together on the computer in the morning prior to the beginning of class.

The present ratio of students to computers is 4:1. Our sixth grade classroom has a laptop for each student with a wireless printer.

Our building has also been set up and is now a totally wireless environment.

"Discovery Day"

Last Sunday we had a very successful "Discovery Day" at Akiva.

"Discovery Day" is an opportunity for us to display for potential families and for our present families some of the positive experiences taking place here at Akiva. Several fun activities (a large "bounce about" area in the gym, as well as bingo and refreshments) and educational activities (science experiments, math activities and Hebrew lessons and web sites) were available for the students and families who attended. Tours of the Akiva facilities and the Jewish Community Center were also available.

All of those who attended enjoyed the time spent visiting and learning about Akiva Academy.

Spelling Bee Winners

We recently held our Annual Spelling Bee.
A written Spelling Bee was held one day and the oral Bee was held the following day. All students from grades 3-6 participated in the Bee.
The winner of the written Spelling Bee was Arona Mostov.
All of the students did well at the oral Spelling Bee and it eventually came down to our last two students, Zack Sperling and Meryl Schor. Several rounds later, Meryl was declared our winner.
Meryl now has the opportunity to represent Akiva at the Annual Vindicator Spelling Bee in March.
Congratulations to all of our students who participated, and in particular to Arona, Zack and Meryl. CONGRATULATIONS!!

New Classroom Computers

New Dell Vostro Desktops have been purchased and placed in many of the Akiva classrooms. New laptops have also been made available for our students to use in their classroom.

Technology Update

We are continuing our technology initiative here at Akiva Academy.

Twenty desktop computers and two laptop computers have recently been added to our classrooms. Ten new Dell Vostro 400 desktops have been purchased and placed into the classrooms, while an additional ten "refurbished" Dell desktops are also being incorporated into the classroom settings. Our sixth grade students now have additional laptops available to them as they work on classroom projects.

In addition to the classroom computers, the JCC is nearing the completion of a new computer lab that the Akiva students will have regular access to. The following are some pictures of the technology related activities going on at Akiva.

The lab has wireless desktops, a projector system and will soon have a printer installed.

Akiva Academy Hanukkah Program

We had a wonderful, very well-attended Hanukkah Program here at Akiva on December 4.
Each grade level performed to the packed All Purpose Room audience. Some 250 adults attended the event. Donuts, latkes and refreshments were served following the program.

Ohio State / Michigan Rivalry Week

We had some fun this week at Akiva with the Ohio State and Michigan rivalry. We had a dress up day and three days when a trivia question was sent home. Students, with help from their parents, spent time researching the answer. Prizes were then awarded to students who answered the questions correctly and who were drawn from all of the correct responses.

Veterans' Day Observance

This week, Mrs. Doslovic made arrangements to have representatives from the Korean War Veterans Chapter talk to the 5th and 6th grade students at an assembly here at Akiva. The assembly included the posting of colors, a discussion of the POW / MIA table, each of the five individuals relating their experiences and finally a demonstration of the flag folding.

Traffic / Roof Work

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

This Friday, October 19, there will be some major roof repairs taking place at the JCC. The back driveway, running by the Akiva entrance, will be closed from time to time throughout the day. Be aware that the traffic pattern by the Akiva entrance will be disrupted throughout the day. Repairs should be completed by dismissal time.

Morning Arrival / "Drop Off" Help!!

We need your assistance as we continue to monitor our arrival and dismissal procedures.

Please DO NOT STOP OR PARK by the front entrance during arrival time (8:15 - 8:30)

We have had major congestion in the morning due to some parents stopping and coming into the building during that time.

If you wish to come into the building during those times, please park down in the lot, or at least, further down from the front of the building.

Thanks - Second Harvest Food Drive

A special "Thank You" to the staff, students and their parents for providing non-perishable food items for the Second Harvest Food Drive. The container in the main hall is overflowing. Non-perishable food items are still being received. "Meet the Teachers Night"

What a nice evening at Akiva last night! We had many of our parents in attendance for our annual "Meet the Teacher Night". Parents had the opportunity to visit their child's classroom and to meet and to talk to the teacher. Teachers outlined for the parents some of the expectations and some of the activities that the students will be involved in as they proceed through this academic year.

Thanks to the parents for their continual involvement and their support of our Akiva program.

Having completed our second week of school, I would like to review the following topics. Your assistance in these areas will allow us to make our operation more efficient and safer for our students.

* Please use the signs that you were given for your car windows when you pick up your child at the end of the day.

* A "sign out" sheet has been placed on the counter in the office. For security and safety issues, please sign your child out of the building anytime you leave early with your child.

* Milk, water and juice are available for purchase at lunch time. Water is .50 and milk and juice are .40

* As in previous years, students who have not been picked up by 3:30 each day will be taken to "Kids Konnection", and parents will need to pick up their child at Kids Konnection.

If you have any questions, or if you desire any additional information on any of these topics, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Book Fair - September 4-7

The Book Fair truck arrived this morning to bring us our books and materials!

Reminder
Our Fall Book Fair will take place next week, Tuesday through Friday, September 4-7. The Book Fair will be held in the JCC Adult Lounge from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. as follows:
Tuesday, Sept. 4 - Kindergarten and Grade 1
Wednesday, Sept. 5 - Second Grade and Third Grade
Thursday, Sept. 6 - Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade
Friday, Sept. 7 - Sixth Grade

Computer software along with books, cookbooks and stationery will be included.

If you wish to accompany your child at the Book Fair, please plan to attend during the above times.

Day 2 ...even smoother!

Today, Day 2, seemed to go a little smoother for us and for the students. Students knew where their locker was and where their rooms were when they arrived in the morning. Hopefully, arrival was smoother for parents also today...fewer parents and grandparents parked out front and so traffic continued to move in the morning.
It was also a beautiful day to be outside during recess. Here are some candid pictures of some students from the upper grades while they were outside today.

Getting Ready...

Well, things are still pretty active at Akiva. Carol, Sherry and I, along with many teaching staff members, have been working hard at Akiva to have things prepared for the students' arrival on Monday, August 27.
Most of our work the last week has been in transforming last years Teacher's Lounge into a new second grade classroom.
We have hired Mrs. Barb Guffey to be our new second grade teacher. She spent time with Mrs. Hugli today reviewing curriculum, the daily schedule and other pertinent information. She is very excited about working with us at Akiva.
